Light Weight Delivery Trolley (LWDT) - Modification for Very Tall Colleagues

As a result of issues that came to light during the Delivery Transformation programme at several Delivery Offices, a request was made for the CWU to be involved in efforts to provide a solution for very tall colleagues who were experiencing problems whilst using the Light Weight Delivery Trolley.

These issues were, for example, excessive clipping of heels with the trolley wheels and postural difficulties from stooping to use the standard LWDT.

TrolleyThe CWU have therefore been working with RM Engineering Ergonomists and the Safety team to understand the issues and develop a potential modification to address this.

Royal Mail, with CWU involvement, have been piloting such a modification with four colleagues in a number of locations and these trials have now reached a successful conclusion with the planned modification now having all its required Safety and Ergonomic approvals.

Key points to note are:

* The modification involves an extension to the shaft of 200mm as shown in the picture above. The extended part will be coloured black so this can be easily differentiated from a normal LWT

* Based on the Ergonomic assessments it is only suitable for those colleagues 6ft 3 inches tall or above, with the existing LWT fine for all other colleagues.

* Where a DOM or member of staff believe they have a “tall” member of staff, meeting the above criteria who requires one of the modified LWTs any order will need to be accompanied by an individual workplace risk assessment.

* All orders for already modernised sites should be forwarded, together with the workplace risk assessment, via the Geography Delivery Planning Teams.

Based on some high level modelling Royal Mail do not anticipate the demand will be too great, but they do now have in an initial small stock holding and will be monitoring requirements going forward to adjust projections accordingly.
